Things We Learn from the Hardened and Unthankful Often we look at the poor in condescension. We see that they need food, water, clothing, shelter, and jobs—and to that list we add “education.” But so often it is we who are educated by the poor. Now, there is the cynical kind of poor. And the greedy kind of poor. And the opportunistic kind of poor. And from these kinds of poor people we learn, but not so much from what they say or do. In serving them we learn. We learn from the very act of arresting ourselves to the care of the unfortunate, worn, and bitter. |

Christian students under the authority of the local church, serving the community in the power of Christ. Renovo Ministries is a Connexion service group connecting college students with folks in need. The group is passionate about answering Christ’s call to serve the least of these as a part of the local church-doing so with a spirit of unity found in scripture. Here’s the story : Renovo Ministries was born from a need. Two Christian students from Bloomington, Indiana found that local soup kitchens did not serve lunch on Sundays. Through prayer, the Holy Spirit’s guidance, devotion of a group of students, and a location provided by a local church, they began serving the meal no one else offered. Their influence in the church community grew, and they soon became a ministry of Evangelical Community Church. Renovo Ministries now offers over 150 volunteers the opportunity to serve their community. In Fall 2007, they will be launching new opportunities for students to pursue Christ through service. Through their actions, active relationships with existing ministries, and relationships with those they serve, Renovo is devoted to sharing the gospel of Christ. As a ministry of the church, Renovo is a way for the Body of Christ to answer Christ’s call to go and make disciples within in their local, national, and global community. |

Today was fantastic, we started with words of wisdom, inspiration, and love. Our message was to reach out with love and kindness to our guests. Our first Renovo of the summer was a great success. I believe we succeeded because of the overwhelming sense of community we developed with each other. Working apart of a team, God’s team, we were able to accomplish great things today. Usually at the Shalom center we have about 50-60 guests for Renovo, but today it was probably a little bit over 100! God’s presence was felt today as the guests replied with thanks and appreciation of our serving and generosity. I felt very safe knowing that I was serving God with a community of believers. At some point we did run out of food for our deli bar but God provided and brought us more food for our guests. Everyone was talking and having a blast. We feed the souls of many today through words and our actions. God calls us to serve for poor, today we did that and will continue to do that with love and humility. I thank all the volunteers for serving today and I will continue to pray for the word of God to be spread throughout this ministry. |

Psalm 40:5: “Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. Psalm 66:16: “Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.”
These passages are on my blog, and I just want to take the time to consider with you the importance of sharing our stories, our experiences of God. John Calvin, in his Institutions, emphasizes ‘how do we know what we know?’ We can know God because of His revelation to us in Scripture, and the majority of Scripture is anecdotes of how God’s worked in peoples’ lives. |

It's WINTER! Last weekend we had our second Renovo youth event, and three cheers for all the volunteers who braved the weather! Our theme for the day was "Make a Joyful Noise," and wow, we made a LOT of noise. Because the sidewalks were so treacherous, only a few kids came...but we had fun with the ones who did! We decided to put off the special worship and message and spent the whole afternoon just hanging out instead. Piggyback rides, the hokey-pokey, coloring, making jewelry and paper airplanes, throwing a beach ball around, trying out rhythm instruments and a keyboard, hide-and-go-seek in a big open room... I'm not sure which part was the best.
